  Year of the Songbird

“When I was given the opportunity of sight, I wasn’t afraid of what I would see; I was afraid of what I would feel. And what I felt was a burning need to return to the fruit of my blindness, for only in the dark was I truly able to see.” — Madeline of the Ark, R.H. 28

“Year of the Songbird,” written by award-winning writer/director Bryan Caron, is an emotional journey exploring one young girl’s passage from the bed of innocence to the grave of immorality.

Set twenty-six years after World War III, Madeline, who lost her sight in a fire as an infant, lives a healthy life in a small Utopian community built as an anti-thesis to what initially caused the war, the history of which has been romanticized to keep the knowledge of sin, corruption and vice from the consciousness of its kin. When Grayland, a stranger from the outside world, stumbles upon the community, Madeline becomes intoxicated by his presence, sensing a connection to him that she doesn’t understand. When he offers her the chance to experience the world she so desires to be a part of, Madeline follows him into a truth she’s not at all ready to accept.

Spiritually resonant and genuine in its conviction, “Year of the Songbird” speaks on many different levels, dealing with the power of addiction, sexual and spiritual awakening, the corruption of labels, how outside influences can devour even the strongest of convictions, and how weakness and vice are more easily attained than virtue and happiness.

I’m Ian Martyn, scienceBoston me small fiction and fantasy writer.  I live in Surrey in the United Kingdom. One long hot summer as a teenager (they were all long hot summers then, weren’t they?) I visited a friend’s house. Her Dad had a collection of sc-fi and fantasy paperbacks. The covers looked great. I picked one at random, started to read and I’ve been hooked ever since.  Now, I’m writing them.

My books are available through Amazon on Kindle and on other e-reading platforms.  ‘Bleak – the first mission’ is now free on Smashwords.

I am currently working on a mystery with a magical edge to it, working title  ‘Inspector Kirby and Harold Longcoat’.  I also have two follow-up volumes to ‘Ancestral Dreams’ in draft.

August Authors – Miranda Nading

August Authors!

Check out  the works of Miranda Nading right here!

Though she started writing short stories in the third grade, she tackled her first novel-length manuscript, Witch Hunt in 1992. As a single mother, time was a precious commodity and though she had little to spare, she continued writing and completed her second manuscript, Exodus, in 1994. Echoes of Harmony followed in 1996 and would become her breakout novel in 2014.

Her other works include Caliban and Canyon Echoes, and the emergent Extinction Series: Genesis, Flash Point, and Judas. As she continues working on the ten book series, Extinction, Miranda also participates in a short story anthology whose proceeds go to charity. It will later end up in a short story collection which will include her favorites. Also planned is Eldorado: A Cottonwood Cove Adventure.

The genres Miranda prefers to write are also among her favorite reads: Thrillers, Science Fiction, and Horror, all with a suspenseful edge that leaves the reader riding the edge of their seat and turning the pages. The Extinction Series is her first exploration into Post-Apocalyptic suspense with a hard dystopian edge and more than a little science fiction. Though she has read some historical romance, she prefers romance to be the seasoning in the dish, not the main course.

Her favorite writers include but are in no way limited to Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, Sir Author Conan Doyle, T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost, Robert Browning, Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz, and Stephen King. These are authors whose work she rereads once every year or two as she says, it is like visiting an old friend.

Eldorado Gold
The trail of a Civil War ghost leads Isabel Byrne to the Colorado River and Lake Mohave. When a diver washes up with evidence of the Holy Grail of Civil War legends, she finds herself caught between a group that would kill her to keep their secrets and prison time.
Tomas Armijo does not trust Isabel Byrne as far as he could throw her. He has fallen for the wrong woman before, and it had cost him two years in the slam. To find the diver’s missing brother, Tomas is going to have to stand up to his past and put his heart on the line.

August Authors – Martyn Currill

August Authors!

Check out  the works of Martyn Currill right here!

In his own words:
(spot the UK spelling, Ed)

“I’m Martyn, old enough to know better but young enough not to care. I have two novels out, I currently write ‘urban fantasy’ but intend to branch out in future. I live in England with my fiancé, baby daughter and one extremely dumb but adorable dog. Keen on creating strong female characters, among others.”

When a young vampire hunter is saved by one of those he is sworn to destroy, he is forced to question everything he was taught. He soon learns that there is far more to vampires – and to the conflict he was born into – than he ever realised, and he finds himself siding with sworn enemies to pursue their cause. Read, in his own words, the story that altered his life as he recounts the night of his salvation and his entry into the hell that followed.
